Mercedes-Benz to Implement Tmap Navigation in Korea: A Strategic Move Towards Enhanced Infotainment

Mercedes-Benz will apply Tmap in South Korea.

On the 22nd, local time, Mercedes-Benz attracted attention by mentioning Tmap at a global strategy presentation held at the Mercedes-Benz R&D Center in Sunnyvale, California.

At this event, Mercedes-Benz announced that it plans to develop dedicated software called ‘MB.OS’ to be installed in new cars by 2025. CTO Markus Schäfer stated, “We will collaborate with regional tech leaders,” mentioning, “Tmap exists in Korea.” This marks a partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Tmap to strengthen sales in the domestic market.

Previously, Mercedes-Benz utilized a three-word navigation system developed by a startup in the UK. This system divides the world into 3m x 3m areas, combining three words for each zone, thus allowing for location identification even in places where traditional addresses do not suffice. However, it was not widely used in Korea as it did not fit local needs.

In light of this situation, Mercedes-Benz consistently sought strategic alliances with Tmap and reached a point of integrating the Tmap infotainment system.

Already, brands like Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover have installed Tmap infotainment in their vehicles, garnering positive responses from consumers. Therefore, if Mercedes-Benz, the top-selling import brand in Korea, incorporates the Tmap infotainment system, it is expected that the long-standing issues regarding the navigation and infotainment system in Mercedes cars will be significantly improved.

Mercedes-Benz Korea stated, “There is still no specific timeline set for the application of the Tmap infotainment system.”
