Polestar Unveils Its New Design Studio in Gothenburg

Polestar has opened the “Polestar Design Studio” in Gothenburg, Sweden. The new design studio is located in a lush forest in Torslanda, close to Polestar’s headquarters.

To provide a professional space that can accommodate a design team of up to 120 people in the future, Polestar has established the “Polestar Design Studio,” which combines the brand’s straightforward and clean minimalism with Scandinavian aesthetics and modern architecture.

This studio was completed in 1984 by Italian architect Romaldo Giurgola and local architect Ove Swahl, originally used as a Volvo building. It has been fully upgraded while preserving the unique characteristics of the historic old building.

Maximilian Missoni, the head of design at Polestar, personally worked on the design theme and layout of the Polestar Design Studio. As a result, the studio features key materials and details used in the 1980s construction coexisting with high-quality modern Scandinavian design.

The design studio includes a professional showroom, a clay working area, a materials and color laboratory, an auditorium, several digital studio spaces, offices, a VR room, and meeting spaces.

The Polestar design team plans to continue building the brand’s new design language, reflected in the Polestar Precept and electric roadster concepts, which will also influence the production of the Polestar 3.

Maximilian Missoni stated, “When integrating the Polestar Design Studio into the existing building, it was important to consider the intentions and quality of materials from the time of its construction in 1982. Thus, we maintained the building’s unique characteristics and basic structure while intentionally showcasing the original structure and details.” He added, “Polestar has created a state-of-the-art studio for a design team that respects tradition while growing together. Inside the studio, equipped with the latest tools, work can be done more easily and efficiently, complemented by a magnificent view of the archipelago to the west of Gothenburg.”

Meanwhile, the design language embodied in the Polestar Design Studio will also be applied to Polestar 3. Polestar 3 is a flagship SUV that retains the advantages of existing SUVs while integrating Polestar’s capabilities and technologies such as pure design, strong performance, and advanced driver assistance systems.

The Polestar 3 showcases aerospace functions and advanced technologies, featuring a strong, wide stance and a low, open roofline. It marks the transition from “seeing to breathing” in the accelerating era of electrification, further challenging designers to embrace intellectual sensibilities.

Maximilian Missoni commented, “In the advanced age, it is very easy to express emotions such as aggression and sportiness in cars. However, it is not easy to convey advanced technology through design. In fact, Polestar has spent a lot of time contemplating how to express the leading technology and sophistication of the Polestar 3. This has allowed Polestar to embody the essence of an SUV while simultaneously showcasing a leap into a new era.”

While the Polestar 3 is designed to reflect technological prowess with external proportions and a sporty stance, it maximizes interior space with its long body (4,900mm) and wheelbase (2,984mm). Additionally, it boasts a wider and more comfortable interior by reducing the surface area of the cabin structure and increasing space for all passengers.

Carefully combining colors and materials, Polestar expresses its Scandinavian heritage with a luxurious image and feel while redefining sustainability and luxury. The full-length glass roof provides a light atmosphere, and Polestar’s signature logo is presented in a new way within the glass roof. The Polestar logo is engraved between two layers of laminated glass, visible only when illuminated.
