Volvo Cars to Integrate TMAP Precision HD Maps for Enhanced Driving Experience

TMAP’s precision road maps (HD maps), providing detailed traffic information such as lane and obstacle recognition as well as central line data, will be integrated into Volvo Cars for the first time. This is expected to not only offer an advanced driving experience but also enhance the performance of driving assistance technologies through supplemental sensor data.

TMAP Mobility will provide Volvo Cars with its own advanced driver assistance system and HD maps for the upcoming domestic release of the EX90 electric vehicle model. The HD maps will be expanded to various brands of vehicles that utilize Volvo’s SPA2 platform.

The HD maps boast over ten times the high performance compared to conventional navigation systems and provide accurate positional information reflective of actual road characteristics, such as road curvature, inclination, and speed limits.

Currently, mobile and built-in vehicle navigation systems recognize all roads as a single ‘line,’ but HD maps incorporate detailed information, including lane spacing, fixed road obstacles, and central boundary lines. This is particularly beneficial for lane changes when entering highways.

Over the past two years, TMAP Mobility successfully established an HD map covering 100,000 kilometers nationwide through the use of Mobile Mapping Systems (MMS) equipped with LiDAR and radar, along with data collection and image recognition technology. As a result, drivers can now receive precise map data with an accuracy range of 25 cm on national highways and expressways.

When driving vehicles equipped with TMAP HD maps, drivers can anticipate obstacles such as central dividers installed on roads, preventing potential collision accidents. Additionally, by knowing the best lane to reach the destination quickly, drivers can save travel time and experience safer driving.

Park Seo-ha, head of Future Mobility at TMAP Mobility, stated, “To enhance the accuracy and safety of autonomous driving technology, we will continuously provide customers with the latest HD maps through an online streaming method,” adding, “We will strengthen our collaboration so that TMAP HD maps can become the ‘core brain’ for automakers to advance their autonomous driving technology.”
