Audi’s Electrifying Success: Sales Boom in 2022 Amid Global Challenges

Audi achieved significant results in its electrification strategy in 2022.

Despite global supply constraints and temporary production stoppages, Audi delivered 118,169 electric vehicles worldwide to customers last year. The share of pure electric vehicles in total sales increased by 44% compared to 2021.

Hildegard Wörtmann, a member of the Audi Board of Directors and Chief Sales & Marketing Officer, expressed confidence that “the increase in sales of pure electric vehicle models proves that Audi’s e-mobility strategy is heading in the right direction.” Audi previously announced plans to launch only pure electric vehicles in all global markets starting in 2026.

The high demand for Audi’s compact segment Q4 e-tron (including the Sportback model) and e-tron GT Quattro is accelerating Audi’s journey toward sustainable premium mobility. The new Audi Q8 e-tron, set to launch in Korea in the second half of the year, is expected to continue the success story of the Audi e-tron, a pioneer in the electric vehicle sector.

Alongside pure electric vehicle models, the A3 (+12.1%), A4 (+8.0%), and Q5 (+2.7%) also showed remarkable growth within the overall portfolio. The year 2022 was particularly notable for Audi Sport, a subsidiary of Audi AG responsible for producing high-performance cars, as it recorded a 15.6% growth in deliveries, reaching 45,515 units compared to the previous year.

Audi delivered 624,498 vehicles in Europe, achieving a 1.2% increase in sales compared to 2021. Demand for pure electric vehicle models also surged in Europe. The upward trend can be seen through the Q4 e-tron (+99.4%), e-tron GT (+29.2%), and e-tron (+8.5%) models, while Audi Sport delivered 29,417 units (30.8% increase), continuing the streak of rising sales across 29 countries in Europe.

Sales in Germany (214,678 units, 18.7% increase) significantly contributed to the growth of the Audi brand in Europe. The notable increase in pure electric vehicle sales (+87.8%) greatly boosted market share. Audi Sport also set a new record in its home market with sales of 12,993 pure electric high-performance models (43% increase).

In 2022, demand for Audi’s pure electric vehicle models skyrocketed in the United States. The sales volume recorded 16,177 units, a 47.3% increase compared to 2021, with Audi e-tron sales alone reaching 10,397 units (+7.2%). Audi boasts the industry’s most diverse electric vehicle lineup since the launch of the Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron, although the overall vehicle delivery number decreased slightly to 186,875 units (-4.7%) due to supply chain bottlenecks and global logistics crises, customer demand for electric vehicles continues to grow.

In the Chinese market, Audi delivered a total of 642,548 vehicles, representing an 8.4% decline compared to the previous year, attributed to semiconductor supply chain bottlenecks and production constraints due to COVID-19. Dealers also faced temporary showroom closures due to restrictions from the pandemic. The number of pure electric vehicle models delivered in China increased by 9.8%, thanks to the successful expansion of the electric vehicle portfolio with the new Q5 e-tron Roadjet, Q4 e-tron, and RS e-tron GT.

The A3 (10.0% increase), A4 (14.9% increase), and Q5 (4.5% increase) also contributed to this growth in the Chinese market.

Recently, global demand for pure electric vehicles has increased to 90.2%. Despite additional impacts due to geopolitical crises and supply chain and logistics bottlenecks, Audi sold a total of 160,310 vehicles (3.5% decrease), achieving remarkable growth in the Middle East (+47.9%), India (+27.1%), and Taiwan (+22.2%).

Hildegard Wörtmann, Board Member of Audi AG and Chief Sales & Marketing Officer, stated, “Even in the dynamically changing global situation, Audi’s global team has once again proven Audi’s competitiveness in 2022.” She added, “Faced with a global economic crisis, Audi remains confident in its electrification strategy and continues to move forward into the future.”
