Peugeot Unveils Ambitious Electrification Strategy with ‘E-Lion Project’

On the 26th, Peugeot announced its electrification vision through a metaverse platform filled with the brand’s image, announced in local time.

Named the ‘E-Lion Project,’ Peugeot’s electrification strategy is designed to deeply respond to the constantly changing times. All of Peugeot’s lineup will be electrified by 2023, and by 2025, electric versions of all vehicles will be introduced. Additionally, the plan includes selling only electric vehicles in Europe by 2030, aligning with the Stellantis Group’s carbon-neutral vision, ‘Dare Forward 2030.’

The ‘E-Lion Project’ specifically includes a comprehensive brand strategy, which encompasses an ecosystem of products and services based on Stellantis’s electrification platform, the STLA platform, end-to-end customer experiences including charging and connectivity, a plan to launch the electric versions of all lineups by 2025, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2038 with minimal power to showcase the best performance and environment, termed the ‘5 E.’

As part of this plan, Peugeot also unveiled its newly developed MHEV 48V mild-hybrid technology. The MHEV 48V system consists of a next-generation PureTech gasoline engine with peak outputs of either 100 hp or 136 hp and a 21kW electric motor equipped with a 6-speed electric dual-clutch. This innovative hybrid technology will be integrated into Peugeot’s entire lineup (208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008, and 408) and will be launched this year.

Furthermore, Peugeot plans to showcase a total of five fully electric vehicles by 2025. This includes the ‘E-308’ and ‘E-308 SW’, the electric versions of the premium hatchback ‘308’ introduced in Korea last July, as well as the electric version ‘E-408’ of the dynamic fastback design that received acclaim at the 2022 Paris Motor Show. The line-up will also feature electric versions of the brand’s family cars, the ‘E-3008 SUV’ and ‘E-5008 SUV.’

Among these, the E-3008 will be the first electric vehicle equipped with Stellantis’s electrification platform, ‘STLA Medium,’ boasting a maximum driving range of approximately 700km. It is expected to launch in Europe this coming second half of the year, with the E-5008 set to follow shortly after the E-3008’s launch.

Specific execution plans to transform Peugeot into a sustainable mobility company were also revealed. Future second-generation vehicles will utilize lighter colored paints and glass instead of black paint and chrome, lightweight seats, recycled wheels, and automotive designs considering the vehicle’s lifespan, among various efforts from purchasing and supply chain strategies to the overall structure and materials used in the automobiles. It was explained that the efforts to minimize weight, waste, raw material, and energy consumption have led to technological advancements showcased with the Peugeot Inception Concept revealed at CES 2023.

These comprehensive efforts will also extend to the design process of future Peugeot electric vehicles. Matthias Hossan, Peugeot’s design director, stated, “The lifespan of future electric vehicles can be extended up to 20 to 25 years.” He explained, “With such long lifespans, the designs will evolve so that core components can be replaced or recycled, maintaining the value of electric vehicles through personalized upgrades and software updates.”

Meanwhile, to enhance customer accessibility to Peugeot’s electric vehicles, subscription services like ‘PEUGEOT As You Go’ and ‘PEUGEOT Your Way’ have been introduced. ‘PEUGEOT As You Go’ calculates the distance driven by the driver and charges a monthly fee accordingly, while ‘PEUGEOT Your Way’ is a monthly package service that includes the leasing, maintenance, insurance, and charging costs of the EV. Users of ‘PEUGEOT Your Way’ can upgrade to different vehicles or cancel the service whenever they wish.

Peugeot is diligently implementing its plans toward Stellantis Group’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2038, and through the E-Lion Project, it forecasts a reduction of the global warming index by 60% by 2030, and 70% in Europe.

Linda Jackson, CEO of Peugeot, remarked, “Carbon neutrality is not just a four-letter word, but a mindset and a strategic approach to planning the future of our brand that everyone in the organization and as individuals should keep in mind.” She added, “The E-Lion Project is also a promise from Peugeot for future generations.”
