Introducing Megawatt: The Largest EV Charging Station in Korea Opens in Songdo

The electric vehicle charging company Sovereign EPS has joined hands with Everon (electric vehicle charging operator) to open the largest electric vehicle charging station in the nation, ‘Megawatt’, in a single building in Songdo, Incheon, with a simultaneous charging capacity of 3,000 kW.

Located near the Songdo Costco (16, Incheon Tower-daero 197beon-gil, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon), the Megawatt charging station is equipped with a total of 60 electric vehicle chargers, including 30 fast chargers (2 of 100 kW and 28 of 50 kW). With a total simultaneous charging capacity of 3,000 kW, it boasts the largest scale in the country. Plans to introduce ultra-fast chargers of 400 kW are also underway, which is expected to significantly contribute to the convenience for electric vehicle users in the Incheon area.

‘Megawatt’ is interpreted as a ‘large-scale charging center’ that completely transforms the common belief among electric vehicle users that charging must only be done at home or work. Charging at apartments or workplaces tends to be slow and time-restricted, which can be cumbersome, but the Megawatt station was designed with ample power and comfortable charging speed from the outset, based on the concept of an ‘ultra-large electric vehicle charging center.’ This means that electric vehicle drivers can use their vehicles without charging stress, much like how gasoline cars use gas stations.

To commemorate the opening, Sovereign EPS plans to hold a month-long discount event with the lowest charging fees in the nation at 199 KRW/kW (Everon member price) for fast charging. Additionally, they will offer 4 hours of free parking for charging electric vehicles and various discounts in collaboration with businesses in the building (such as free towels from Songhae온 Jjimjilbang and a 30% discount on a day pass from GDR Golf Academy or free coffee).

The location where the first ‘Megawatt’ charging station has opened, Incheon, is the only region among the six major cities that showed growth in population in 2021, and the demand for electric vehicles is also steadily expanding.

Choi Moon-young, the CEO of Sovereign EPS, stated, “The ‘Megawatt’ charging station, the largest of its kind in the country, has opened in Songdo, Incheon,” and added, “We plan to expand a network of large electric vehicle charging stations in major nationwide hubs where charging infrastructure is insufficient to promote a stress-free charging environment.”
