Mercedes-Benz’s Contribution: Restoring the Scenic Dohwa-Dong in Uljin

The Mercedes-Benz Social Contribution Committee has signed a strategic business agreement with Gyeongsangbuk-do and Uljin-gun to support reforestation efforts with an investment of 600 million won.

This agreement was established to assist the Gyeongsangbuk-do region, which suffered significant damage from the wildfires on the east coast in March 2022, where over 14,140 hectares of forest were lost in Uljin-gun alone.

In March, the Mercedes-Benz Social Contribution Committee had already set up an emergency fund of 1 billion won for the affected areas from the wildfires, and, after discussions with Gyeongsangbuk-do, selected ‘Dohwa-Dong’ in Uljin-gun as a primary recovery site, deciding to use 600 million won to restore approximately 6.6 hectares of forest within the area. Dohwa-Dong is a famous tourist spot in Gyeongsangbuk-do, boasting beautiful scenery along the East Sea and National Route 7.

The agreement ceremony held on the 24th at the Gyeongsangbuk-do office included attendees such as Lee Sang-kook, Commissioner of the Mercedes-Benz Social Contribution Committee (Vice President of Sales at Mercedes-Benz Korea), Governor Lee Cheol-woo of Gyeongsangbuk-do, County Mayor Son Byeong-bok of Uljin-gun, Chairman Lee Sang-gu of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Comprehensive Volunteer Center, and Head Kim Byung-ki of the Children and Future Foundation. They agreed to collaborate for the swift reforestation of the damaged areas.

Lee Sang-kook, Commissioner of the Mercedes-Benz Social Contribution Committee, expressed, “I am very pleased that we can restore part of Dohwa-Dong, which was devastated by the east coast wildfires last spring, in collaboration with Gyeongsangbuk-do and Uljin-gun. I hope that Dohwa-Dong will be rebuilt as soon as possible and returned to the people of Gyeongsangbuk-do and tourists alike.”
