Hyundai Motor Strengthens Green Hydrogen Ecosystem in Jeju for Carbon Neutrality by 2030

Hyundai Motor is contributing to the establishment of a green hydrogen ecosystem in Jeju Island, promoting the realization of carbon neutrality by 2030.

On Thursday, Hyundai Motor participated in the “Jeju Green Hydrogen Global Hub Establishment Plan Announcement and Start of Jeju Green Hydrogen Production Demonstration Project” held at the Jeju CFI Energy Future Center, collaborating with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and Korea Southern Power Corporation to support the establishment of a green hydrogen ecosystem in Jeju.

This event was held as part of the establishment of the Jeju green hydrogen ecosystem based on the government’s basic plan for implementing a hydrogen economy announced last November, and was attended by Oh Young-hun, Governor of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Park Il-jun, 2nd Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Yoo Won-ha, Vice President of Hyundai Motor’s Domestic Business Division, and Lee Seung-woo, President of Korea Southern Power Corporation.

Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced through water electrolysis, and it is called “ultimate eco-friendly hydrogen” as there is no carbon dioxide emissions in its production process, unlike “gray hydrogen” produced from fossil fuels or “blue hydrogen,” which is produced similarly to gray hydrogen but uses carbon capture and storage technology in its production process.

A large-scale green hydrogen production facility will be established in Gujwa-eup, Jeju City, through a green hydrogen production demonstration project being carried out from 2022 to 2026, applying various water electrolysis hydrogen production demonstration technologies. Additionally, the introduction of hydrogen mobility in Jeju will be promoted in stages in conjunction with this initiative.

By 2025, Jeju plans to distribute 50 hydrogen cleaning trucks, 100 hydrogen buses, and 200 hydrogen passenger cars. By 2030, an additional 150 hydrogen cleaning trucks (total 200), 200 hydrogen buses (total 300), and 1,000 hydrogen passenger cars (total 1,200) will be distributed.

Hyundai Motor plans to start distributing hydrogen city buses in Jeju from 2023 and will also introduce mobile hydrogen charging stations (exclusively for passenger vehicles) to meet the charging demands of Nexo customers.

A Hyundai Motor representative stated, “We expect the era of green hydrogen mobility to open in Jeju Island, the carbon neutrality hub of South Korea,” adding, “We will actively support Jeju to become a global hub for green hydrogen, beyond just establishing a green hydrogen ecosystem for production, supply, and demand.”
